P90X Nutrition Tips from "Dan"

video on one man's nutrition choices / system for P90X.

The Basic Principals Behind the P90X Nutrition Guide

Too many people equate healthy eating with restriction and boredom. Eating healthy foods doesn’t mean eating boring foods. There’s no such thing as a diet, only a lifestyle change. When you take on the P90X way of life you you learn that healthy food is delicious food.

Fats and refined carbs don’t actually have that much flavor—it’s how a meal is prepared with spices and sauces that renders it delicious. Think about it: salsa is low-fat and chocked full of antioxidants, but it has infinitely more flavor than a fast-food french fry.

You should be familiar with the macronutrients. Protein, carbs and fats are the three primary nutrients. You’re probably thinking, “There’s no way I should eat carbs and fats if I’m getting ripped with the P90X home workout!” Ah, but the trick is to eat the right carbs and fats—and in the right amounts.

Here are some guidelines from the P90X nutrition Guide:

  • Get plenty of lean protein with every meal. Lean sources include fish, poultry, beans and vegetarian alternatives. Protein should be the building block of every meal. It gives you the stamina you need to “bring it” to your P90X workout and make it to the next meal.
  • Eat five to eight fresh fruits and vegetables every day. The P90X philosophy is: Don’t ever hold yourself back from enjoying all the fresh fruits and veggies you want!
  • Enjoy whole-grain carbs. Ditch white breads, bagels, doughnuts, cookies and the like. Tear into a hunk of all-natural whole-grain bread instead with gusto! You don’t have to eat carbs at every meal, but you should have at least one serving of carbs every day. That’s because your brain relies solely on carbs for its energy source. Sure, you’ll be trim if you don’t eat any carbs, but you’ll come across as a ditz! Your protein serving should always be larger than your carb serving to prevent your blood sugar from spiking, then plummeting. The last thing you want is to feel weak and shaky during your P90X workout!
  • Enjoy good fats. Good fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated; some sources include avocados, olive oil, fish and nuts. The P90X fitness system recommends fish as the most lean source of protein and as the best source of omega 3 oils. Wild Alaskan salmon is best. Saturated and trans fats are bad; some sources include meat, dairy products and hydrogenated oils.
  • Drink at least six to ten 8oz glasses of water every day. Water flushes away excess fat. That’s a good thing, because you’re going to crave tons of water after your P90X Cardio X, Plyometrics and Kenpo X workouts!
  • Avoid these items at all costs: fast food burgers and fries; hydrogenated oils and high-fructose corn syrup. When you follow the P90X fitness mindset, you don’t even regard them as food. Think of them as poisonous artery-clogging and liver-taxing toxins.
  • Never, ever skip meals or starve yourself. This will only slow down your metabolism anyway. You are going to need plenty of energy for your P90X workouts! Never leave the table hungry, and never leave the table miserably stuffed. Eat until you are full, but not overloaded.

When you enjoy a healthy diet and work out with the P90X system you look and feel great and you have the peace of mind in knowing that you're not only getting the exercise you need but eating the right foods as well.

Great Hub! It took me a very long time to realize that not eating or skipping meals had a big effect on my metabolism. It didn't happen overnight but when I started eating more frequently, it definately helped me take the weight off.

Yeah same here! I think we've been convinced for the longest time that eating in any capacity is what makes you gain weight. This notion really has a lot of people making the wrong choices and completely shooting themselves in the foot as far a weight loss is concerned. I used to be in the same boat! Thanks for commenting!

Ever since we have been working on our new heart healthy menu (forever) I have noticed that I feel much better! Now that I am in the habit of eating fresh veggies and fruits I will stick to this way of eating. Great article!

We must realise that ancient wisdom related to Ayurveda System of Medicine has inherent knowledge about eating. The medicines when in use by some patient or by some healthy person for vigour etc, also carry instructions what to eat and what not to eat unlike in modern allopathy medicine system.

It is absolutely important to adhere to what is beneficial to eat.

Good advice here. Love the enthusiasm!

Hi...I thought you had to limit the fruit intake on p90x -- especially in phase 1, they say you only need 1 serving (I guess it's higher in GI and natural sugars). Is it really ok to eat, say, 4-5 servings of fruit and the rest veggies?

nice lens, eating healthy and loosing weight does not necessarily mean depriving ourselves with the food we like but eating the right amount and proper knowlege.

It's funny how the healthy eating sticks with you. I stopped doing the P90X workouts last month but I'm still eating right. (I am planning to start up again next week though)

Except in the p90x nutritional guide, you are limited to the amount of fruit and veggies you can eat :P im on phase 1, and can only eat 1 fruit a day

You're right. The healthy foods are not boring. This is an excuse for people who fail in their search for a healthy lifestyle. Thanks for the tips.

I love eating fruit but in Phase 1 of Fat Shredder (level 2) i see it only recommends 1 serving of fruit and 4 of veggies, may sound silly but can I eat more fruits or should I stick to the servings they say?

Eating right is the hardest thing to do while doing p90x.

Hi.. I am about to start my first day of p90x today. I attempted it a few months ago, but didn't push myself enough to go through with it. I don't eat unhealthy now. I eat salads and fruit regularly, but for some reason I can not lose my belly fat or love handles. I think it may have something to do with not enough exercise, or cardio. I also have an extremely slow metabolism. I weigh 125 and I'm 5'4. My goal is to get 6pack abs, hopefully p90x will be beneficial in reaching my goal. I also work an office job, and I don't leave my desk much throughout the day so this slows down my metabolism even more and requires me to work harder in burning off the calories. Is there any advise you can give to help lose belly fat, and love handles.. nothing has worked so far. Things I can eat to help lose this or things I can do to help get better results from p90x. I don't eat beef, or red meat at all. I only eat lean meats and seafood. I don't eat fried food. I may eat too many carbohydrates, or maybe too much fat because I consume alot of nuts, olive oil and coconut oil. I also eat alot of fruit. Any suggestions?

Hey everyone,

Lifestar said "Eat five to eight fresh fruits and vegetables every day. The P90X philosophy is: Don’t ever hold yourself back from enjoying all the fresh fruits and veggies you want!"

However, the p90x nutrition guide states that you should only be eating 1 fruit serving/day during phases I & II, ans 3 servings during phase III.

All this to say, I think it's important to watch fruit intake because of all the sugars. eat more vegetables.

I hate saying this though, because I looove fruit.

I am a mother of four wonderful children and a stay at home mom Two years ago I weighted 210lbs after having my daughter and was so depressed and felt so unattractive. So I started running and lost 40lbs then I stopped losing weight so I started P90X and I love it. I don't have to leave my home to go workout, my kids sometimes do it with me, and I see great results. Of course I do fall off the program cause of my hectic life of being a wife and mother but when I start seeing my body getting flabby I pull out the P90X and with just one workout I feel Good and sexy. Since doing P90X off and on I have lost 13lbs and plan on losing 17 more pounds or more with this program. http://www.90dayworkout-plan.com
